How is airway dentistry different from regular dentistry?
A regular dental exam screens for cavities, gum disease, and oral cancer. An airway-aware exam adds: tongue position and posture, palate width, jaw range of motion, breathing pattern, sleep history, and bite collapse. The findings are often the earliest evidence of sleep-disordered breathing, sometimes years before a sleep study would confirm it.

What does an airway evaluation cost?
A standard new-patient exam at Dental Excellence already includes airway-aware evaluation, no extra charge. If treatment is indicated (oral appliance, palate expansion, myofunctional therapy referral), each is quoted separately and verified against your insurance benefits before scheduling.
Do I need a sleep study?
For diagnosing obstructive sleep apnea, yes, a medical sleep study (in-lab or home test) is required before fitting an oral appliance. For airway evaluation in general, no, that's part of every exam. We coordinate the sleep study referral when one is indicated.
Can airway dentistry help my TMJ pain?
Often, yes. Many TMJ cases are driven by airway compromise, the body clenches at night to keep the airway open, and the jaw joint pays the price. Treating the underlying breathing issue frequently relieves the joint symptoms more effectively than a night guard alone.
